As my mother is going to have a surgery and i am very concerned about her as I have did a web search and came to know about some pills that needs to be avoided. So just wanted to know that does any pill can irritate the stomach and lengthens the timing of recovery? Or which pills needs to be restricted after the lap band surgery?

Yes it is quite true that many pills irritates the stomach and lengthens its recovery time. You must always follow the recommendation and advice of your surgeon and always check with your surgeon before taking any lap band pills or stopping any lap band pills.

Few pills causes stomach irritation following lap band surgery and few patients are able to take these pills without any problem. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naprosyn, can cause stomach irritation. Some Patients are able to take acetaminophen for relieving pain after the lap band surgery. Few of the water pills or diuretics also lead to irritation in stomach following lap band placement. If this diuretic is taken post op then it might create potassium deficiencies.

Another pill which patients need to avoid is aspirin. Lap band patients must avoid this aspirin for at least 48 hours after surgery in order to reduce the risks of post surgical bleeding. Common pills that contain aspirin include Alka-Seltzer, Excedrin and Vanquish. If patients’ intake aspirin or any other blood thinners then post surgical bleeding might occur and it must be stopped to reduce the risk of any serious complications. So, it is always recommended to consult surgeon for lap band pills pre-op and post-op.
