Having shoulder pain after lap band surgery. Is it common?

Hi, I just had gone through the lap band surgery and have lost 15lb so far. From the last few weeks I am experiencing severe pain in my right shoulder. Whenever I try to raise I arms it hurts a lot. I was wondering if anyone of you has faced this lap band shoulder pain after surgery.

My brother has just banded a week ago and even he was also suffering from left shoulder pain after lap band surgery. Shoulder pain after lap band surgery is very common. This very surgery involves inflating the abdomen with carbon dioxide so that the surgeon could see inside better. However this very inflation leads to lap band shoulder pain. Patients who sometime overeat might also face the piano in shoulders.

During the first two or three days the pain in shoulders is very common. The pain occurs because the diaphragm and shoulder share few of the same nerves. The Gas presses and irritates the nerves and results in lap band shoulder pain.

In order to relieve the lap band shoulder pain you can try out by taking medications like Codeine which is a narcotic pain medicine or Acetaminophen both will help ease shoulder pain. You can also try out massage. Application of heat can also help you in easing shoulder pain. Application of heat like apply heat packs once per hour can help you a lot. You can also try cold therapy like try by placing ice pack on the affected shoulder areas of shoulders. Alternatively you have the option of rubbing creams or gels to ease pain. If the pain is too much and it is hurting you very much then you must consult your surgeon.
