Explain lap band erosion and its cause ?

I heard that lap band erosion is one more possible complication after lap band surgery. What actually it is and what are the causes of lap band erosion?

Lap band erosion is another side-effect of lap band surgery. Lap band erosion caused when gastric band start eroding to stomach wall and it migrate from stomach wall to stomach. It means band erode and enter in to gastric lumen. It makes lap band ineffective. About 2 to 10 % patients face this problem. As soon as band start erodes in to stomach then bacteria from the stomach enter around the band. Then the infection travel around the tube to port.

Lap band erosion depends upon the technique used in surgery, surgeon experience, device used in surgery and most important is patients follow up of diet. Using alcohol and smoking is also a factor which causes erosion. Sometimes during surgery stomach damage which makes weaken the layer of stomach and it favors erosion of lap band. Sutures which are placed cause micro perforation and later erosion. Food habit like eating of hot food and alcohol may also lead this problem.
